Travel Journal 2018: Narita

One of Tokyo’s two airports is located in Narita. But the town also boasts a neat little old shopping street and the Narita-san temple.

A surprise was waiting for us inside the temple’s pagoda. Instead of a peaceful Buddha, there’s a massive blue statue sitting in a halo of flames. Looking pretty fierce, it’s holding a sword in its right hand. It’s a Myōō, another deity in Buddhism. Even though he looks hostile, he’s actually seen as an ally against the forces of evil. It was a pity that photos weren’t permitted.

Sadly, we didn’t have much time to explore the area further today, but it was fun while it lasted.

And that wraps up our fourth trip to the Land of the Rising Sun. Tomorrow our flight heads back to Germany, where we’re in for way colder and rainier weather. Thanks for the hospitality, Japan! See ya next time.
